Jacó's Errand Run Has a Second Center Up by Route 34, and It Keeps a Resident's Hours

At six in the morning, up by the Costanera, Plaza Comercial Costa Nera is already open for business. Fresh Market's Jacó store opens at 6 a.m. every day of the week and closes at 10:30 p.m., according to the chain's own store directory. Mocapan opens its door the same minute.

Those opening times line up with the customers these businesses have named. The companies moving into this corner of town have said publicly that they are building for people who live in and pass through Jacó all year.

What is open at Costa Nera right now

Costa Nera sits in the Avenida Amapola area along Route 34. Fresh Market places its store on the northeast side of the Garabito Justice Courts, inside the plaza. The Mocapan location page calls the center "Centro Comercial Costanera," so both names refer to the same place.

Business Status Published hours
Fresh Market Open at Plaza Comercial Costa Nera Daily, 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Mocapan Open, the chain's first shop outside the Greater Metropolitan Area Mon–Sat 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sun 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Little Caesars Operating in the same commercial area Not listed
KFC Moved to a larger site closer to the highway Not listed
McDonald's Announced for Avenida Amapola on Route 34; no opening date published as of September 20, 2026 Not yet open

El Financiero reported on September 3, 2026 that the coffee and bakery chain invested about $200,000 in the Jacó shop, its ninth location and its first outside the Greater Metropolitan Area. The Tico Times put the Mocapan shop at 16 jobs. KFC's move involved an investment of about $500,000 and about 25 employees, and the company said the new site was meant to serve residents, tourists and people traveling through the Central Pacific.

The McDonald's is still in the works. CRHoy reported a recruitment fair in Jacó on August 7 and a second one scheduled for September 9. On September 20 the Tico Times said the restaurant had been announced but had no public opening date. Until the company names a date, the highway-side lineup is the four businesses above that are already serving customers.

Why national chains are betting on a Tuesday in October

Within a few months, a supermarket opened, a bakery chain made its first move outside the capital region, a fast-food restaurant relocated, and a burger chain began hiring for a new site. The Tico Times summed up the pattern as companies seeing "enough permanent customers to support businesses throughout the year."

The construction figures behind that bet stand out. Citing INEC, the same report says Garabito recorded 106,875 square meters of new residential construction in 2024. That was the second-highest total of any municipality in Costa Rica, behind only Santa Cruz in Guanacaste, in a year when residential construction declined nationally. The canton's population went from 17,229 in the 2011 census to 26,672 in the government's 2022 estimate, an increase of about 55 percent. The Tico Times described the result as two economies running side by side, one for visitors and one for people who actually live here.

Opening hours are where that second economy shows up in daily life. A 6 a.m. opening every day of the week, Sundays included, fits a weekday routine, and so does a 10:30 p.m. close.

The town center still keeps the weekly calendar

Costa Nera covers early mornings and late evenings. Jacó Central Park still owns the fixed weekly days. The Municipalidad de Garabito currently lists two recurring events there, both running through December 31:

  • Feria del Agricultor, the farmers' market: Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a second session on Fridays from 6 to 10 a.m.
  • Feria de Emprendimiento y Desarrollo Local, the entrepreneurship and local-development fair: every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Both schedules come from the municipality's own event pages for the farmers' market and the Saturday fair. Those pages are the place to check before heading out on a given week.

Put the two centers together and a week in Jacó looks like this:

When Where it happens
Any day, 6 a.m. Coffee at Mocapan and groceries at Fresh Market, Costa Nera
Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Feria del Agricultor, Jacó Central Park
Friday, 6 to 10 a.m. Farmers' market morning session, Central Park
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Entrepreneurship fair, Central Park
Sunday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mocapan's shorter Sunday hours
Any night until 10:30 p.m. Last grocery run at Fresh Market

On Thursday, October 29, the produce stalls are listed as open in the park until 10 p.m., and the Friday session on October 30 starts at 6 a.m. That is the same opening hour as the highway-side stores.

The town center is also getting public investment. On its project page, the Municipalidad de Garabito lists council approval of an extraordinary budget that includes concrete-road upgrades, bridges near the Jacó clinic and in Herradura, boulevard work in Jacó and Herradura, and sidewalks including Avenida Pastor Díaz. The page marks the project "to be completed" and gives no construction schedule. A separate municipal page lists a new bridge to Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca as underway, also with no published timetable. Spending on the Avenida Pastor Díaz sidewalks shows the municipality is still investing in the walkable core around the Central Park, even as daily shopping moves up toward the highway.

The weekend of November 7 and 8 belongs to the beach

Nine days after Thursday, October 29, the busiest scene in town shifts back to the sand. The U.S.-based National Scholastic Surfing Association will hold the first Costa Rica round of its new Central America and Puerto Rico conference at Playa Jacó on Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, 2026, according to the schedule Periódico Mensaje published on October 12.

This is a youth contest, open to surfers under 21. Periódico Mensaje reports that the NSSA approved the expansion into Central America in July. The conference is run with the Federación de Surf de Costa Rica and covers boys' and girls' Under-16, Under-14, Under-12 and Under-10 divisions. Those categories will be aligned with the federation's 2027 national circuit. For families with kids in the water, that ties the Jacó weekend to the same divisions the national circuit will use next year.

The full five-stop round runs as follows:

  1. November 7–8, 2026: Playa Jacó, Garabito
  2. December 12–13, 2026: Playa Santa Teresa, Cóbano
  3. February 20–21, 2027: Tamarindo, Avellanas or Playa Hermosa de Santa Cruz, Guanacaste
  4. March 13–14, 2027: Playa Cieneguita, Limón
  5. May 8–9, 2027: Playa Hermosa de Garabito

Garabito is the only canton on the list with two stops, opening the round at Playa Jacó in November and closing it at Playa Hermosa in May. The contest opens on a Saturday, so the day can start with a 6 a.m. coffee at Costa Nera, move to the beach, and end at the Central Park fair, which stays open until 9 p.m.
